New Spanish baby shown on a silver salver

December 1, 1901

Not long after the Princess of Asturias gave birth to her son, Alfonso, her husband, "bearing the new-born infant, wrapped in a rich robe, on a silver salver, showed him, according to custom," to Spain's Prime Minister and several other government officials, according to the Madrid correspondent of The Times of London.

The Presidents of both houses of the Cortes, the Papal Nuncio, and high court officials and ladies were also invited to the presentation ceremony.

The Princess of Asturias is the eldest sister of King Alfonso XIII of Spain.  She is the heiress presumptive to the throne, and will remain the heir until Alfonso marries and becomes a father.  The Princess was married on February 14 to Prince Carlos of Bourbon-Two-Sicilies, who was created an Infant of Spain by King Alfonso.

The Princess gave birth yesterday in Madrid.
