Prince of Wales heads to Coburg for funeral

August 2, 1900

The Prince of Wales, the Duke of York and the Duke of Connaught are en route to Coburg to attend the funeral of the late Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
The First Lord of the Treasury, A.J. Balfour, today offered an address of sympathy in the House of Commoners, paying tribute to the "late Duke's ability in naval affairs." Lord Salibury, the Premier, "moved an identical address in the House of Lords, and also eulogized the Duke's work for the English Navy," according to the New York Times.
The late Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was the second son and fourth child of Queen Victoria. He died at Schloss Rosenau on July 30. He is survived by his wife, Grand Duchess Marie, and their four daughters, Crown Princess Marie of Roumania, Victoria Melita, Grand Duchess of Hesse and By Rhine, Alexandra, Hereditary Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, and Princess Beatrice. Alfred's only son, Hereditary Prince Alfred, died in unmarried and without issue in February 1899.
The Ducal title has passed to Alfred's nephew, Prince Charles Edward, Duke of Albany, the son of his late brother, Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany.
